Import-Export Code Registration

IEC Stands for Import Export Code. Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique code issued by DGFT – Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce which is a 10-digit number. For Importing or exporting in India, IEC is mandatory. No person or entity can make Import or Export without IEC Code Number. An IEC is necessary for import/export of goods. However, in case the import/export is of services or technology, IEC is required in only limited circumstances, i.e. import/export is in ‘specified services’ or ‘specified technologies’.

Further, certain transactions do not require an Export-Import Code like Import and export of goods for personal use which is not connected to trade, manufacture or agriculture. Persons importing or exporting the goods from or to Nepal shall not be required to obtain the IEC Number provided the CIF Value of a single consignment does not exceed INR 25,000 etc.

IEC Stands for IMPORTER EXPORTER CODE. IEC Code is issued by DGFT- Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, and Government of India to Indian Companies. An IEC is necessary for import/export of goods. Any person shall not be able to import or export without having an IEC Number. An IEC shall be applicable to all the concerned branches, departments of the person taking the IEC.

  • IEC shall be issued against the PAN of the applicant in case of proprietorship
  • For other than proprietorships, the IEC shall be issued against the PAN of the entity (firm/company).

The first obligation of the person before starting any import/ export business in India is to apply for an IEC. An IEC is necessary for import/export of goods. For the import/export of services or technology, IEC shall be required for only certain issues, when import/export is in ‘specified services’ or ‘specified technologies’

Yes, services can be imported or exported without IEC, however In case the import/export is of services or technology, IEC is required in only limited circumstances, when import/export is in ‘specified services’ or ‘specified technologies’, i.e. services or technologies in which international trade is restricted by the Government of India as they pertain to national security, such as dealing in nuclear weapons, automatic guns, etc.

IEC is not required under the following Circumstances:

  1. If the goods are imported or exported which are not connected with the trade/ manufacture/ rendering of services of the concerned person.
  2. If the goods are imported or exported by government authorities and certain notified charitable organizations, than obtaining IEC is not mandatory.
  3. Importing/exporting goods from/to Nepal where the CIF value of a single consignment is not more than Rs. 25,000/-
  4. Import/export of goods from or to Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas where the CIF Value of a single consignment is not more than INR 25,000.

If there is any change in the information earlier provided while obtaining the IEC code, then Modification in the IEC code is to be done.

For example:  If the ownership of a proprietor-firm, who has been issued an IEC undergoes any change due to sale, gift, inheritance or any other reason; and it continues to be proprietor-firm even after such change, then an application to incorporate such details of change along with PAN details of the new ownership be made before the concerned authority. If by such change of ownership, the nature of firm changes from proprietor-firm to any other type, again necessary application to incorporate the changes shall be made to the concerned authority.
